Craft Beer Co Launches Home Brewer of the Year Contest

Specialist craft beer pubco, The Craft Beer Co, is launching a new set of awards aimed at home brewers, with the overall winner getting the chance to brew their beer commercially and win a £5,000 cash prize.

The awards will recognise beers across a wide range of categories, with the overall winner of The Craft Beer Co Home Brewer of the Year getting the opportunity to brew their winning beer with the Dark Star Brewing Co.

Craft Beer Co managing director, Martin Hayes, said:

“There’s never been a better time to drink craft beer. There are so many great brewers producing such a diverse range of beers, it’s frankly amazing. People often overlook the fact that most of the well-known craft brewers started as enthusiastic home brewers.

“The winner will have their winning beer brewed commercially and it will be available to the trade as well as being stocked across The Craft Beer Co estate. Our hope is that, following the launch of their beer, the prize will act as seed funding for (the winner’s) own commercial venture.

“We’re extremely excited about these awards — giving recognition to, and helping nurture the next generation of great brewers is absolutely at the heart of our business.

“Leading up to and beyond the awards, we will have regular gatherings for home brewers to share ideas and will be converting a room at our Islington pub in the newly named Home Brewers’ Room, where eventually we’ll have our Hall of Fame showcasing the annual award winners.”

Martin Hayes, Craft Beer Co managing director.

The competition categories: are pale ale, dark beer, lager, stout/porter, sour, speciality and wheat beer.

The entry deadline is January 7, 2014, with the winner announced on February 3 at an event to be held at The Craft Beer Co, Islington.

Home Brew Club evenings will start at the same venue from September 2, then every Monday evening, with an opportunity for home brewers to share their beer with other like-minded individuals and pub regulars. Each month there will also be a guest speaker sharing their wisdom.
