Is this the biggest beer yet?

New brews are arriving at specialist beer retailer Beers of Europe all the time, but this one really is a bit special. Danish brewers To Øl are well known for wild adventures in brewing, but this time they’ve gone for big stage presence.

Mine is Bigger Than Yours XXXL is a barley wine aged in Muscatel and bourbon barrels for nine months then put into 15-litre Nebuchadnezzar bottles. Only 12 bottles are available in the world, priced at £1,995! This bottle arrived at Beers of Europe this week.

Tobias Emil Jensen and Tore Gynther founders comes with some pedigree as one of their former college teachers was Mikkel Borg Bjergsø of Mikkeller fame. To Øl are gypsy brewers, that is they don’t have their own plant, they make use of other people’s.

This beer was brewed at the De Proef Brouwerij in Belgium and is described on To Øl’s website as “a big fat beast packed with every potent ingredient we had at the brewery. This has tons of malts and hops combined in one big fat, yet balanced brew.”

Hops are Columbus, Simcoe and Citra, with barley malt, flaked oats and light candy sugar. The ABV is 12.5%.
